    Review

"Jamieson's brilliant insight into the young bipolar patient is incredible. But more importantly, Mind Race is a must read for both teenagers with the disorder and their families in learning to cope with this illness, because it will save lives."-- Andy Behrman, author of Electroboy: A Memoir ofMania

"Patrick Jamieson has written a good, solid primer for young people diagnosed with bipolar disorder and for their families. His book is full of sound, no-frills advice from someone who knows what it means to live with bipolar disorder. Jamieson has used the advice in this book to rescue himself from the perils of bipolar disorder, and made a fulfilling life for himself. I hope my own children will do as well."--Paul Raeburn, author of Acquainted with the Night, a memoir of raising children with depression and bipolar disorder

"An incredibly important work, and a road map to hope for young people living with bipolar disorder."--Bev Cobain, author of When Nothing Matters Anymore: A Survival Guide for Depressed Teens

"Mind Race is the book Patrick Jamieson "searched for and could not find" when he was 15. Reflecting on his adolescent years, Jamieson renders a gripping, first-hand account of his struggle with bipolar disorder. Mind Race deftly weaves the author's personal narrative with current medical information on diagnosis and treatment. Most importantly, Jamieson demonstrates that the illness can be managed, emphasizing that "the illness is not our identity." Adolescents and young adults facing the challenges of bipolar disorder will draw both inspiration and information from this unique contribution to the growing literature on bipolar disorder."--Kate C. Pravera, Ph.D., Executive Director, Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation

"An excellent introductory book on bipolar disorder. While useful for teens and young adults recently diagnosed with this disease, adults and caregivers should read this book, as it is one of the easiest-to-read introductions to the mental, social and medical challenges of this disease."--Journal ofMental Health

5.0 out of 5 starswhat is it like to be biploar?August 10, 2007
    By Pamela Moceri
    Format:Paperback

As a professional, I am always on the alert to find books that educate me, my clients, and their families. When a family member can have an experience of reading a similar account of what their loved one who is afflicted with that illness cannot say to them directly, it can build a bridge of understanding that weeks of family therapy may not be able to do. Understanding may not fix a situation, but it can open a window of compassion. This book does that and is quite readable as well - accurate, funny, poignant, and real. I highly recommend it.

      Review

[Emily Martin's] serious and engaging book...is a much an ethnographical study as it is an autobiographical account. Martin...goes beyond just seeing how medicated bipolar patients deal with their illness: she argues that at least one aspect of bipolar disorder is today seen as a model for a certain type of productive behavior in society. This positive reading of mania comes...to be part of the way that bipolar patients internalize their illness. Martin's book documents our late 20th and early 21st century and its treatment and rehabilitation of bipolar disorder. In examining our world she shows how we have moved from [a] culture of narcissism to a world of mania. (Sander L. Gilman Lancet )This book is exceptional in that it spans the fields of anthropology, psychology, psychiatry, and sociology. Martin expertly incorporates the literature from these fields with lay perspectives and experiences from support groups and clinical subjects. This book provides new insights and a deeper understanding of the bipolar experience in America. (Rif S. El-Mallakh American Journal of Psychiatry )Anthropologist Martin continues with her long-standing project of unpacking U.S. values, categories, and, in this case, psychopathology as artifacts of history and society with a focus on their cultural rendering, shifting content, and context....General audiences as well as specialists who have particular interest in the social and cultural life of mental health in the contemporary U.S. will appreciate this book. (S. Ferzacca Choice )If there is a single thread that runs through this timely, well-researched and wide-ranging book, it is that bipolar disorder is a framework of our time for understanding and even facilitating new conceptions of rationality, irrationality, mood and motivation. (Roy Richard Grinker Project Muse )This book provides a very welcome development (substantive and theoretical) in the field of anthropology, but economists, politicians, and historians reflecting on the recent depression in the US, and the 'cold' caught by other 'Western' countries, would also do well to read it. (Christine McCourt Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute )Emily Martin shatters common sense distinctions of public and private, individual and communal. In the process, she makes sense of what may seem counter-intuitive on the surface: the conscious self-presentation and sociality of people living with the diagnosis of manic depression. (Helena Hansen American Journal of Psychiatry's Residents' Journal )

      Format:Hardcover

As someone experienced with the ups and down of depression and anxiety, I am so grateful for this book. In "Bipolar Expeditions," Martin gives us an honest and unflinching look at the lives people lead with mania and the way depression in general is shaping our world. This work should be read by everyone and anyone affected by mental illness and those looking to understand the drastic shift from 'slow and steady wins the race' to 'last one to the finish line is a rotten egg.'P.S. Not only is there no mention of polar bears in this book, there is no 'misleading' title to indicate that possibility.

        By John McManamy
        Format:Paperback

Parents of bipolar kids are among my favorite people. Despite the terrible illness that brings us together, I always manage to part company on a feel-good note. Maybe it's their love and dedication and intelligence and optimism in the face of circumstances that would leave anyone else embittered and demoralized. Maybe it's their sixth sense for projecting the kind of empathy that can't be faked. One of these individuals is Tracy Anglada, whom I met last summer at a conference in Stockton, CA that featured Dr Papolos and Janice Papolos. I was there in a dual role as a reporter for this Newsletter and to work up a pre-publication buzz for my soon-to-be-released book. The organizers of the conference kindly allowed me a table to exhibit my wares. One of my fellow exhibitors was Tracy, and we found lots of time to talk.Tracy is a Florida mom who started up her own organization, BPChildren, dedicated to helping young people and adults understand more about pediatric bipolar. She is the author of "Intense Minds: Through the Eyes of Young People with Bipolar Disorder."One quick look at the opening paragraphs, and you will drop everything you're doing:"A broad smile spread across my son's face. His eyes shone brightly and he turned to me to share his good news. What was the cause of excitement for my 6-year-old son? We were at a meeting, and the speaker was describing the horrible plight of the Biblical man Job."'Job was so sick, he wanted to die,' said the speaker."What was my son's good news in response to that statement? Two simple words: "Like me!" He had finally found someone he could relate to, someone else who wanted to die. It was comforting for him to know he was not alone. It was no comfort to me. As a parent, those were the worst words I could have heard."This is a book where the kids (or adults recalling their tormented childhoods) get to tell their stories. It's designed for kids to read, but any clinician or educator or other interested party who does not buy a copy is guilty of malpractice. Listen:"I was told how retarded, demonized and horrible a child I was. So I never felt I was wonderful or good." (Dawn)"I was trying to survive in an environment that was not the same to me as it was to other people." (Tasha)"It feels like a ping pong ball going from one side to the other in my head - one bounce telling me to stay quiet, the other bounce telling me to scream." (Tim)"My dreams were scary. I was zipped in a bag of water in my closet drowning, while bad guys were trying to kill my daddy." (Steven)In case you still think we're forcing meds on kids:"I would have been better off being treated if I had been diagnosed properly. I was miserable as a child. Horribly miserable." (Lee)And, last but not least, the good we can take away from all this:"I use this illness to my advantage. Be strong and remember where you have been and what you have been through. If I beat those days, I can beat anything now that I know the illness, the symptoms and the feelings of it." (Linda)

          Review

"The second edition of Bipolar Disorder, like the first, is a major contribution to the understanding of a common, complex, painful, and too often lethal illness. Miklowitz, one of the world's leaders in the study of psychotherapeutic treatments of bipolar illness, presents clinical and research findings in a way that will be invaluable to clinicians."--Kay Redfield Jamison, PhD, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

"Among the first to embrace the idea that psychosocial interventions might be of value to those who suffer from bipolar disorder, Miklowitz continues to be a leader in the field. The second edition of Bipolar Disorder represents yet another valuable contribution to clinical practice and research. Miklowitz has added new evidence for the effectiveness of family-focused treatment for adults from a series of recently published studies. He has also added rich new material on childhood bipolar disorder and how it emerges over time within the family context, as well as more clinical material on applications for adolescents with bipolar disorder and their families. Essential reading for anyone interested in the treatment of bipolar disorder."--Ellen Frank, PhD, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic

"This timely second edition is most welcome. Miklowitz and his colleagues have significantly advanced the field of integrated treatment for bipolar disorder. The empirical basis for a family-focused approach is now well established, and we can safely apply these treatment strategies to new populations, such as adolescents with bipolar disorder. This book will appeal to any mental health professional who wants to learn how to deliver family-focused treatment successfully."--David J. Kupfer, MD, Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

          Format:Hardcover

Emotional disorders such as bipolar disorder are never the private inner conflict of one person - they affect the families of the bipolar individual a great deal as well. "Bipolar Disorder: A Family-Focused Treatment Approach" examines the disorder as a problem that the afflicted and his or her family must face together, touching on emotional resistance to treatment, distinguishing to the disorder from the person, and the importance of communication. The enhanced second edition includes a study on new treatments for the ailment, and new case studies. "Bipolar Disorder: A Family-Focused Treatment Approach" is highly recommended for community library health collections and for anyone afflicted or related to the afflicted.

As a counselor and someone diagnosed with bipolar II, I was looking for more information specifically related to bipolar II, particularly one with updated medical information. This book was full of research and information from several authors who have spent their careers studying bipolar. The fact that this book focused exclusively on bipolar II was a realy draw for me. This book is written more for the professional, but can also be helpful for people who have bipolar II and are looking for more research and information. I highly recommend it.

Over the past 20 years I've had several friends who suffered from manic-depressive illnesses. It's abundantly clear to me that the disease is primarily biochemical and "not their fault." But I had trouble understanding why these people refused to take their medication (or stopped taking it after they started) and otherwise engaged in massive denial. Jamison's frank and well-written book was a revelation: now I feel I have a better sense of the seductiveness of mania, and why creative, intelligent people are often willing to risk the lows of their illness for the sake of the highs. As Jamison points out emphatically, however, the long-term effects of bipolar disorder can be devastating mentally and physically (not to mention the financial and personal fallout) -- hence her crusade to understand the basis of the illness, and learn how to fine-tune the medication so that the sufferer achieves equilibrium without deadening the sensitivity and creativity that often accompany this disease. I'd already read "Night Falls Fast," which is also excellent, but this book set out the personal story behind Jamison's research interests. While she insists that love alone won't cure the disease, it's also clear that, without the love of her loyal friends, this intelligent, talented, and articulate woman might never have made it through the more difficult years, let alone become a respected authority in her profession. Anyone who suffers from bipolar disorders, and those who love them, should read this book.
