I teach in both RN and Psych Tech Programs in the state of California, and I can tell you that this book makes an excellent text when studying the field of Pyschiatry. It is an excellent book for those persons entering the field of Nursing or Mental Health. Not only does the book define classic mental conditions such as schizophrenia, psychosis, depression, obsessive/compulsive disorders and all the other basic mental disorders, it also allows for the "theraputic use of self" when the student encounters someone who is in need of an individualized interpersonal response. A person can only go so far utilizing a Nursing Care Plan; the art of Psych Nursing is one that is discovered daily and under many unique and challenging conditions. This book serves as a valuable guiding light; it is a book for reference, and a great scientific base to all things Psych.Critical Thinking excersises are also included, which will help the student prepare for the State Board Exams that they are all heading towards passing this exam as their goal.I think that this book added to any Psych cirriculum will be a golden touch to the program it seeks to help. This text also defines medications used to treat mental disorders, gives pharmacologic overviews and precautions.Newer psych diagnosis, such as "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" which generally belongs in the teen patients is discussed on page 468 and makes for some interesting reading. One possible outcome that may result as a by-product of studying this text is that one may "diagnose" persons in their life that are not "patients."Thus the borderline diagnosis line of disorders can be the basis of much controversy at times.Get this book - read it - study it - use it as a reference and it will open up the world of Modern Psychiatry for you in ways that you will appreciate and value.

      Review

"This is an exceptional book for both the literature reviews of empirically supported treatments and the hands-on descriptions of these treatments. It will undoubtedly aid in the delivery of psychological treatment. In a body of literature replete with general comparisons, reviews, and meta-analyses, this book stands out as a truly practical step-by-step guide to the major psychological treatments currently available. Students of psychology, psychiatry, and related fields should embrace this in their training....5 stars!"--Doody's Review Service

"This is the best single-volume presentation of the state of the art for psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals working with people suffering from common mental disorders. Each up-to-date chapter provides a comprehensive review of assessment and therapy methods. This fourth edition will be an indispensable resource for clinicians for years to come."--Michael E. Thase, MD, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic

"An outstanding resource. Each chapter presents a creative blend of theory, research, and practice, offering unique insights into the latest developments in evidence-based treatment. Barlow has assembled some of the most important authorities on psychosocial interventions to provide a comprehensive understanding of effective clinical practice. Our Counseling Psychology program has used the previous editions of this book in counseling practica and advanced intervention courses, and students were overjoyed to find a book that helped them make the transition from the classroom to the clinic. I have told psychology graduate students and psychiatry residents that if they could buy only one book on psychotherapy, this would be the one to buy."--Leonard A. Doerfler, PhD, Professor and Director, Counseling Psychology Program, Assumption College

"This latest edition of a classic continues the excellence of prior editions. Leading scientist–clinicians review the best theory and research on the nature and treatment of a broad range of psychological disorders, providing an essential guide for students, faculty, and experienced practitioners alike. This handbook has been the field's 'go-to source' for facilitating evidence-based practice and, even more importantly, for modeling disciplined clinical decision making in all its complexity. Like its predecessors, the fourth edition is a boon to graduate teaching and learning and will make applying evidence-based approaches more accessible for practitioners."--Gerald C. Davison, PhD, William and Sylvia Kugel Dean's Chair, Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, and Professor of Gerontology and Psychology, University of Southern California

"This book continues the tradition of previous editions by offering some of the most widely used treatment approaches, described in great detail by the developers of the protocols....How can we provide patients suffering from various mental health problems with the most rigorously studied, efficient, and effective treatments? How do we best offer trainees in psychology, psychiatry, and other disciplines, as well as experienced clinicians, direction in the application of such approaches? This book proffers an excellent answer to both questions."--Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

      Format:Hardcover

I'm a licensed mental health clinician. I've used the previous edition of this text and have reviewed the current one. While it is very informative regarding cognitive behavioral treatments, there is a serious deficiency. Some of these 'manualized' treatments utilize patient handouts as a core tool of the work. These are not included in the text. For example, Miklowitz and the Bipolar chapter. If I purchase a text like this, I don't want to have to purchase even more books to get the tools, or engage in extensive scavenging to find them, or spend the time creating my own. That defeats the purpose of my purchase. Perhaps the necessity of having to additionally purchase the published books of all these chapter writers is a goal of the editors and authors, but it is not my goal and won't happen. It inclines me to return to journal articles (which is perhaps best anyway) based on the needs of my caseload, because tools, patient surveys, handouts, are usually included. Call to the authors and editors: Do you want your work to inform clinical practice or not? If so, please make your work fully and genuinely usable for the clinician's office. Thank you.

4.0 out of 5 starsA moving and enlightening readMay 28, 2009
          By Tim O'C

The call that every parent dreads came at 3 a.m., Hong Kong time: her beautiful 23-year old daughter, just months away from completing her U.K. university course, had leapt to her death. The news was an awful shock to Rona Ross but not a complete surprise. Jennifer had suffered terribly from bipolar affective disorder (sometimes called manic depression) since puberty, and made many earlier attempts, resulting in repeated hospitalizations. Those afflicted by the disease are in fact 15 times more likely than the general population to succeed at taking their own lives. It had taken years for Jennifer's increasingly erratic behaviour to be correctly diagnosed, let alone treated, and her parents had endured repeated frustrations in obtaining an answer to their desperate plea of "what is wrong with my daughter?" Recognizing how little useful information was available to other bipolar sufferers and their families, mother and daughter were already determined to collaborate on a book that might help them cope with the debilitating disorder and begun work just before Jennifer's tragic death. In this powerful, evocatively titled memoir, Ross completes their project and relates Jennifer's heartbreaking story in the hope that others may get the help they need.Written in a straightforward, brutally honest style, Bathed in Blue is at its most harrowing in recounting the family's often mindboggling struggles with an unsympathetic medical establishment in both Hong Kong and the UK. That any psychiatrist could think it wise to decorate a waiting room for mental patients with faux bookcase wallpaper and a chair in the shape of a leering, multicolored jester clown is just one comic example of the hurdles encountered. What becomes clear is how poorly doctors and nurses understand bipolar disorder (particularly in the young), the ravages it inflicts on the lives of its sufferers and their families, and the critical importance of a personalized plan of care that engenders that all-important hope for the future.Photographs of Jennifer at various ages and her often very moving diary entries are woven throughout Bathed in Blue, bringing her intelligence, droll sense of humor and feisty personality to life. The book also includes a list of useful bipolar-related resources (magazines, newsletters, websites and helplines). In a concluding chapter, Jennifer spells out her vision for future psychiatric care, offering commonsense suggestions based on her own less than satisfactory experiences with intimidating psychiatrists and callous mental hospitals. How often do medical professionals in their omnipotence ever stop to seek such advice from the people most clearly qualified to provide it? Earlier in the book, her mother explains how the stigma of mental illness renders people mute regarding their disease and its treatment, while suicide too often silences them forever. "Their suffering and their plight becomes forgotten and nothing changes," she writes. "This renders them invisible and without a voice. Jennifer asked me to be her voice and this book is her voice."

Bipolar Affective Disorders: Etiology and Treatment provides a thorough, yet succinct description of the spectrum of BPD presentations along with a discussion of the most current and appropriate treatments--both pharmacological and otherwise. Its pages are littered with helpful graphs and comparison/contrast charts summarizing information discussed in the chapters. Chapters themselves are broken into subheaded and numbered (e.g. 5.3.9) sections to assist with quick-referencing.The jacket of the book poignantly describes the edition as a "pocket book for physicians." The book is recommended for mental- and physical-health practitioners, students of psychiatry, or students of psychology specializing in BPD.

5.0 out of 5 starsAll you need to pass the shelfJuly 31, 2011
              By BluesKid
              Format:Paperback

A 25 year old medical student comes into your clinic complaining of anxiety for the past week. He tells you he has an upcoming shelf exam in psychiatry and "I haven't studied." Further history reveals that his clinical rotation did not expose him to all aspects of psychiatry, and there are major gaps in his knowledge base. His medical history is unremarkable other than a healing bruise on his right temple from wrestling a PCP-intoxicated schizophrenic to the ground. He reports some difficulty falling asleep but notes that "reading case files helps." When asked how his rotation has gone so far, the student says "fine, but I think one of the attendings has it out for me." When asked if he had any reason to believe the attending was conspiring against him, the student responds "dude, it's an expression. I meant he doesn't like me." Student denies anhedonia, depressed mood, or audio or visual hallucinations. Utox is negative. What treatment approach will be most effective in this patient?A. psychodynamic psychotherapy to find the source of his anxietyB. cognitive-behavioral therapy to overcome his fear of PCP-intoxicated schizophrenicsC. risperidone for his persecutory delusionD. full leather restraints to assist study disciplineE. Lange Q & A PsychiatryE. Psychodynamic psychotherapy generally requires the patient to meet with a therapist for 4 or more sessions per week. Also, the patient has given you an identifiable stressor, his upcoming shelf exam. There are no indications that the encounter with the schizophrenic is the cause for his anxiety, so CBT would not be indicated. The patient clarified that he does not hold a persecutory delusion toward his attending but merely responded in a form of casual lay speak. Leather restraints may prove helpful in avoiding study distractions, but the patient would require a 1:1 sitter to turn the pages. Lange Q & A psychiatry is the only response that offers a time-sensitive and targeted approach to address the patient's underlying concern. The book will keep him engaged, expose him to all aspects of psychiatry, and prepare him for the format of the shelf exam. While this treatment can be augmented with another resource, it is not required for therapeutic benefit.

I first saw this book in 1997, the second year after the first version of this book, when I was in my master's program in China. I didn't pay much attention to it since my future job will not involve high-power or high-voltage IC design. After I graduated from Univerity of Tennessee, I got a job offer from a semiconductor company and became an engineer to design products related to automotive electronics. Then,I bought this book for my job. This book was written by a group of very experienced engineers in ST microelectronics ten years ago. I was surprised this book is still very useful today. Part of the contents may be out of date, but most of the chapters were still used again and again in modern designs. I wish these authors can rewrite this book and include some new developments in both academic and industry. Overall, this is an awesome book for engieers who will start their careers in power electronics. I recommend it.

                  Review

"This excellent volume is a very practical, well-organized, and elegant guide to the diagnosis of mental disorders. As readers of his other books know, Morrison is a great writer with a wealth of clinical knowledge, wit, and great common sense. This volume will be highly appreciated by medical students, psychiatry residents, psychology interns, and their teachers. It is a terrific teaching text."--Richard Balon, MD, Wayne State University School of Medicine

"This introduction to the process of mental health diagnosis is the best and most readable book on the topic I have seen. The author has an engaging, even entertaining manner of introducing the reader to basic principles of diagnosis. He uses excellent examples to apply these principles to a variety of common Axis I and II diagnostic categories. I was particularly impressed with the inclusion of tables that succinctly summarize the complex material. This book would be appropriate for any graduate-level course on the topic of DSM-IV diagnosis in any of the human service professions."--Joseph Walsh, PhD, Virginia Commonwealth University

"Dr. Morrison’s extensive clinical experience shines through in this well-written, accessible guide to the complexities of mental health diagnosis. The book is brought to life with numerous clinical case examples, providing students and clinicians with rich illustrations of how diagnostic principles can be applied across a wide range of presentations. This text is particularly well suited for courses in clinical assessment and interviewing, though seasoned practitioners will also find it useful for sharpening their skills."--Martin M. Antony, PhD, Ryerson University, Toronto

"Morrison has again written a very useful book for mental health practitioners. This easy-to-read book is spiced with pertinent clinical vignettes and flow charts. The book provides a series of diagnostic algorithms that nicely complement the treatment algorithms increasingly being used in clinical practice. After all, treatment algorithms are of little use if the diagnosis is incorrect. Students and residents will find this a most helpful contribution, and experienced clinicians also will have much to gain."--David L. Dunner, MD, University of Washington

"This book presents a clear, easy-to-follow framework for understanding the process of diagnosis."--Carolyn A. Bradley, PhD, Department of Social Work, Monmouth University

                  1. What makes James Morrison's books special to meJames Morrison has a wonderful quality: He is precise without losing his warmth. From graduate school (I have an M.A. in Psychology), I know the following dilemma: Nobody wanted to make a diagnosis of a patient (and wanted even less to be diagnosed!), because it felt like "putting people in boxes" or "being judgmental"; people were afraid the diagnostic process would be mechanical and heartless, the more so, the more precise one tried to be. Indeed, estrangement between clinician and patient/client is a danger of the diagnostic process. On the other hand, I also saw the opposite: the attempt of being close to a client, to establish warmth and rapport, can blur the clarity with which the client's problems are perceived and described. When diagnosing, it is difficult to have both, precise diagnosing and establishing optimal rapport. The best way to learn how to unify precision and rapport is to have a mentor who can do this. James Morrison's books on diagnosis are, in my opinion, such a mentor. In every description and discussion of a patient you feel the warmth toward the described patient; at the same time you can clearly see how and why Morrison diagnoses a patient in a certain way. (At times, by the way, he also describes cases when a diagnosis cannot be made.) And he does not only like the patients, he also likes you, the reader, which you will soon feel when you start reading. In addition, James Morrison writes very well. Reading him is a joy. The descriptions of his patients are personally (not just clinically) interesting: at times you can read it like a novel. He shows humor that is *never* denigrating. And it is, in a way, a very easy read. It is not an easy read because it is fluffy, needs pages to explain a point, or glosses over complicated topics, but because it is structured so well that one thing naturally leads to the next. Dolly Parton supposedly said of herself, "It's quite expensive to look so cheap"; with regard to James Morrison's books I would to say, "I must have been quite difficult writing a book that is so easy to read."2. ContentThe book has three parts:I. The Basics of Diagnosis, describes the diagnostic method: How to get from the signs and symptoms of a patient to the differential diagnosis (i.e., a list of possible diagnoses), how to put these into a hierarchy (the "Hierarchy of Safety") and how to pick one (or several) as your working diagnosis. He discusses how to deal with conflicting information, missing information, uncertainty, and possible comorbid diagnoses in this process. Morrison stresses how important it is to "cast a wide net", i.e., consider a wide range of diagnoses in the beginning to avoid narrowing oneself down too fast with the danger of possibly missing the correct choice.II. The Building Blocks of Diagnosis, covers (a) what information we might want to get, beyond and apart from just a symptom list, to understand the whole patient as a human being, (b) the connection between physical and mental illness, covering especially the case that a physical or substance problem causes the patient's mental symptoms, and (c) the role of the Mental Status Examination in a short summary.III. Applying the Diagnostic Techniques, discusses in depth diagnostic problem fields (such as Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Psychoses, Cognitive Disorders, Substance Use Disorders, and Personality Disorders), each in a seperate chapter. (I am not through reading this part of his book.)3. Relationship to Morrison's other booksPart I, in which the diagnostic method is explained, was covered in a shorter version in his "The First Interview" (Ch. 18). I am very thankful to be able to read this material in an elaborated version, enriched with more discussion and case studies. Part II covers material that Morrison already covered in much greater detail in his "The First Interview" and in "When Psychological Problems Mask Medical Disorders" (both of which I highly recommend). But Morrison did not just copy-paste this part from his older books, but wrote these chapters anew. Thus, I did not find it boring to read them; rather, they presented a helpful summary of what I already knew. Part III (which I have just started) seems to cover material that Morrison already wrote about in his "DSM-IV Made Easy". But he arranged it very differently. Currently, I have the impression that it goes beyond his "DSM-IV Made Easy" insofar as it discusses details and subtleties not thus discussed in his earlier book. E.g., he gives very nice "decision trees". It may be that it is helpful to have a basic knowledge of mental health diagnosis if one wants to get the most out of this part, as it discusses details that a beginner may not be able to appreciate. Whatever, I always feel it is helpful to read cases and case discussions, as these discussions somehow sink into my unconscious and, in the long run, help me make better decisions for my patients.4. For whomI think this is a good book for any student of mental health diagnosis, be it as a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, social worker, psychiatric nurse, or psychiatry intern. As a refresher, and if you think you have some bad diagnostic habits that you might want to challenge, I think it would also be interesting for more experienced diagnosticians. (I do not think that lay people would be really interested in this book, although I do think an intelligent lay person with a batchelor in any field would probably understand it.) Should you read this book if you have read his other books? Well, I think it can hone your skills, deepen your knowledge, refresh things you might have forgotten--and it won't be boring.I wrote this to give something back in return for all the help I received, personally and professionally. I hope this was helpful to you, the reader.
